For most people in Asia, the dominance of folklore terdiseminasi orally. Even so, not least intellectual works of Asia, which even measured by today's standards of civilization, considered to have ideas and a high level of complexity. This grandeur is also found in manuscripts of the proto-Indonesian intellectuals. This is why the collection of oral sources and non-verbal culture of Indonesia. Oral tradition or folklore could be shaped oral stories, riddles, folk poetry, prose stories of the people, and folk songs. The most widely used form is the form of stories and fables, such as story Nyai Roro Kidul or Si Kancil.


Why use the oral traditions are important? Oral tradition / folklore reflects an aspect of culture, either directly or indirectly, and the themes underlying the life, such as birth, family life, illness, death, burial and calamity, or natural disasters that are universal, like those found in the story Nyai Roro Kidul, Malin Kundang and Gretel and other stories. The story of oral traditions from various islands in Indonesia, which contain different norms that should be used as examples in habits and daily life, not only in a particular social environment, but also in the public environment in general.
